The exception to the tradition
Masters of the internal martial arts, the arts that cultivate and direct qi, are rarely accessible. If you are lucky enough to find one, they often don't speak English or aren't willing to share. Of those who do share, few are teachers. The tradition was always: train hard, for years, before you are even shown the good stuff.
Master Yap is a true exception. He began training as a young child under his father, a grandmaster of martial arts, feng shui, and Buddhism. Multiple lineages were passed to him, and as a lineage holder he has built a richer, more effective curriculum, one that can transmit in three years what would otherwise take ten.
"We have never met a more caring, dedicated, positive, and supportive elder in the martial arts."
Part of what draws us to Master Yap is the human being. He is an exceptional teacher, and that care comes through in every session.
The intelligent web inside you
Many of us have heard about the growing attention on the fascial network: the white connective tissue that wraps the red muscle and every structure of the body. It is increasingly understood as an intelligent web, an information highway for awareness, and a place where the body holds emotion. It is densely packed with sensory receptors, and when engaged skillfully it becomes a source of remarkable strength.
Think of Bruce Lee's one-inch punch: fingertips connected to toes like a web of pulleys and springs. In Master Yap's tradition, these lines are called the strings, and activating them is one of the first doors of training.
Qigong is a relatively modern term, used mostly for health. Nei Gong always kept its martial component as an integral element: optimized body mechanics, rooting, centering, and grounding. Historically it was taught only to the most senior monks of the Southern Shaolin Temple.
Master Yap's system, Yan Shou Gong 延壽功, "The Art of Longevity," was created by two grandmasters with roots in the Southern Shaolin tradition, Grandmaster Chee Kim Thong and Grandmaster Yap Cheng Hai. It distills the essence of Nei Gong into sets that are easy to learn, quick to practice, and produce real internal skill. In his teaching, internal development unfolds through six levels:
Basic muscular strength, where everyone begins.
Refined force from the connective tissue, born of release rather than contraction, like drawing a catapult.
Intention, the mind's control of where energy goes.
Life force, generated by an entirely different system.
Spirit, courage, presence.
Emptiness.
The fruit of this path is a gift: becoming powerful, rooted, and grounded, able to receive external influences, physical or emotional, and direct them into the earth.
